Now that we are in our new home, I've been having fun hanging pictures on our 'new' walls. All the walls are white so I don't have to mess around with matching colors...pictures to walls, that is. However, it does take me a while to decide what to hang where; I mean, those pictures are probably going to be hanging there for a long time so I want to get it right. So, I lay them out (if I have a grouping), rearrange them and then put them all away so I can think about it a little longer. This does not make for a speedy decorating process. I have had piles of framed photos laying around this house for weeks now until I finally had to get tough with myself and get them on the wall. Yeah, I know, they are only pictures and I'm not sticking them on the walls with super glue. So, I threw caution to the wind and started hammering away.
That brings me to the different techniques for hanging pictures. If we left this up to Grandpa, he would be dragging out his tape measure and level. I don't have time for such a production....I wasted all that time in the deciding stage, remember? I prefer the 'grab a nail, whack it and hope for the best' technique myself. I mean....if it's too high or too low, no big deal...pull the back out, change the position of your nail and whack it again. You can keep doing this until you get it right, really...I have. Now, I have had great success in this technique EXCEPT when the first nail is too high; way too high (and I've had my share) and you have to bring the nail down. If the hook is high on the back of the picture, you can only go so far down until you start seeing the first holes you have put in the wall. But, on the flipside, if you have to raise it, you can keep moving the nail until it's where you want it. All those holes will be hidden until the day you take the picture down. I took one picture off one wall in Milwaukee to pack it, and there were four nail holes in the wall behind it. I have to admit, that surprised even me. I'm usually not THAT far off!
I'm happy to say that I'm making progress and our new home is really starting to take shape. However, I have to head to Lowe's to get more nails....out of the nice small ones. Although my picture hanging is in the form of "on a wing and a prayer", I do have my standards when it comes to my choice of nails!
