Zen Garden Under Construction

It started out with just the bird bath. Then came the wind chime and little black fence. I had told Grandpa that I wanted to plant flowers in this area so he thought it would be nice to have a border around my little space. The bird bath has a motion 'thingy' in the middle that ripples the water and together with the wind chime, it struck me as a very relaxing spot in our back yard so I decided to call it my 'zen' garden (from my Yoga classes of years ago). I still want to dig up the grassy area and plant flowers. In fact, I have a bag of daffodil bulbs ready to stick in there so it will be a blast of color next fall. I am also thinking of putting lilies in there so they can bloom after the daffodils are finished...it's sort of a guessing game right now since we are dealing with quite a different planting and growing winter. In fact, would you believe that pansies and violets survive and flourish during the winter down here? They are specially formulated to take on the mild winter weather down that we have as opposed to the harsh winters of Wisconsin. The pansies are called "Cold Wave Pansies" or "Rebound Pansies". We plan on planting those in our pansy pots that we had for the summer but did not do well at all in the sunny spot where they were put. So, I'm excited to try the winter ones.

Still coming is another shorter hook with a tiny bird house and maybe a small garden flag. I've even thought about getting a bench to set out there so I can sit, read and enjoy my little 'spot' of the back yard. Will keep you posted.
