Also, I've been busy learning a new square in quilting. Our group is making a quilt for a Medal of Valor recipient to be awarded in the beginning of 2014. But, we don't like to wait till the last minute so we are slowly working on it. Above is one of the squares called Flying Geese. Now, this has been a REAL challenge for me. Just look how those points have to fit together! On the first day, I worked on just the middle square all morning (actually, I have four to make so I worked on all four middles). If you didn't know it before, let me tell you that the seam ripper is the best tool an sewer can have. In fact, you should have several because if you are like me, you will use it, put it down, forget where you put it and have to waste time digging around for another one. The next time I'm at Joann's I'm purchasing some more.....they really should come in a 4-pak! From now on, I am not starting a new project without at least three seam rippers at my side.
We have to keep a perfect 1/4" seam allowance to get this square to work out and get the points. This is not as easy as it sounds. I have a 1/4" marked on my machine with painters tape (many of us do) but the tape started to shift which threw my seams off. THIS is why you need seam rippers! But, I didn't get rattled and forged on. I soon found out that the middle square was the easiest part. Putting on those side pieces to get the points to come out just about did me in. My seam ripper was smoking!!
I have this one completed and the other three up to putting on the side pieces. It will get done by our first meeting in September. And, actually.....I have to pat myself on the back a little. I was only assigned one but some of the members copped out so some of us others had to pick up the slack and do more. But, that's ok.....practice, practice, practice....the only way you get better. And, as I learn more and more, I can see my work turning out better which is what it's all about.
