READ! That's the mantra at this house during the summer. School may be out but that doesn't mean that the girls have a vacation from reading. I've become really adamant about this along with their teachers who sent home a summer school reading list. So, I figured I could do my part. I searched out the nearest library, got my first Tennessee library card (it even came along with one of this plastic tabs for your key chain....of course what doesn't these days?) and lugged home a pile of books. It's not a very big library (Seymour) but has a wonderful section for kids. I even found some Ramona books....their moms read those books and they are still a hit!
Also, you can pick up good books at good prices at garage sales and it's even better if you have the read-er with you. If they pick them out, they will read them. And it doesn't stop at just reading the books. They need to turn in a simple book report and we are keeping a list of books read to show their teachers when school starts up again. But there are also rewards for reading....yeah, yeah so some call it bribery but if it works, go for it! After so many books read they earn something special to them. We negotiate and so far Madison has earned a trip to Subway. Hey, whatever trips their triggers.
As for me, I'm knocking out books on my Nook but I have to admit, my favorite reading times in this house is when the girls read to me. I especially like the Junie B. Jones books. That girl is a real 'pistol'. It's almost like someone wrote a series of books about our Madison.
Reading at the Schmidt-Smith home is on!!
